The Fourth Annual Conference of Centre for Chinese Visual Arts Art in the Public Realm: Mass Culture and Identity
China Academy of Art, Hangzhou
20-21 November 2010
The Third CCVA Annual Conference, Public Space, Art and Collective Memory, was hosted at School of Art, Birmingham Institute of Art and Design, on 9-10 November 2009. It examines a variety of issues including: the significance of public sculptures, monuments and socially and politically engaged art in the development of public space, the role of public art in the creation and revision of collective memories, and the use of participatory art projects to encourage new social relationships.
Based on the successful framework, the Fourth CCVA Annual Conference will continue the discussion on ‘public art’ in an interdisciplinary and contemporary context. It aims to explore ‘Art in the Public Realm’ further, and to extend the reflections by re-assessing the ‘Mass Culture and Identity’ today. The following pairs of notions are suggested as possible perspectives for proposals:
- Public space and mass art;
- Public realm and virtual reality;
- Participatory art and mass culture;
- Collective identity and mass movement;
- Mass artists and mass audience;
- Contemporary art biennials and daily life.
The Fourth CCVA Annual Conference will offer at least one of the two days in particular, to encourage and invite contributions from current doctoral students within the CCVA Partnership Institutions, namely, China Academy of Art (CAA), Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) and Birmingham Institute of Art and Design (BIAD).
Authors wishing to respond to this call should send an abstract of not more than one thousand words by no later than 3 September 2010.
